The use of green copper as a fungicide has ancient origins. Some Studies published in the 9th century show that this element prevents wheat from decay. Equally fortuituos were the observations made in the same period on the activity of copper downy mildew. The toxic effect of copper is carried out in a non-specific denaturation of enzymes and individual proteins of the pathogen, which represent the result of its mechanism of action.
The reason why copper is not toxic for higher plants and insects could be found in the fact that that none of the two absorbs the metal.
